Ofgem predicts electricity shortages by 2015. What will this mean?

Three years ago, energy regulator Ofgem warned of future power shortage risks in the UK, however its most recent report, the first of an annual Electricity Capacity Assessment, reveals these electricity shortages will come much sooner than initially expected, as early as 2015. Here, voltage optimisation provider EcoAdapt (http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk) looks at what this will mean for consumers.

Ofgem’s recently published Electricity Capacity Assessment reveals that Britain’s spare energy generating capacity could fall from the current 14% to just 4% within only three years. This is, according to the energy regulator, due to the earlier than expected closure of coal-fired power stations, closures which Ofgem first predicted back in 2009. Ofgem claims that another contributing factor is EU environmental legislation. The organisation’s Chief Executive Alistair Buchanan stated, “The unprecedented challenges in facing Britain's energy industry… to attract the investment to deliver secure, sustainable and affordable energy supplies for consumers, still remain.  Ofgem is working with government on its plans to reform the electricity market to tackle these issues."

While Britain waits for this market reform, what are the implications of the impending power shortages for the average British home and business? The bad news is that an increase to KWH prices is unavoidable and therefore energy bills are likely to rise. There will also be instances of voltage sag and power surges, voltage volatility which could shorten the lifespan of electrical equipment. The good news is that there is something that can be done not only to protect equipment but also to reduce electricity costs and maximise energy efficiency, even given Ofgem’s stark predictions. The answer lies in the installation of voltage regulators, energy saving technology such as that provided by EcoAdapt which is proven to cut carbon emissions, protect equipment against voltage volatility, reduce energy bills and protect UK businesses from the power shortages set to befall Britain over the coming years.
